Reuben and Rachel; or, Tales of old Times. A Novel. By Mrs Rowson. 2 Vols. 12mo. 7s. sewed. Lane. 1799.
This production is a strange medley of romance, history, and novel, in which the scenery is changed with the pantomimical ra-[117]pidity of Voltaire's Candide. New characters and new narratives are frequently introduced; and we were in some measure surprised that a novelist of Mrs Rowson's experience should have aukwardly thrown together, in two volumes, a number of stories sufficient (in the hands of a dexterous manufacturer) to have occupied nearly ten times the space on the shelves of a circulating library.
