ART 22. The Gipsey Countess, a Novel. By Miss Gunning. Four Volumes. 12mo. 14s. Longman and Rees. 1799.

If Miss Gunning's productions do not rank among the most excellent of their kind, and if she may not be allowed a degree of reputation equal to that of Mrs Ratcliffe, Mrs D'Arblay, &c. yet it is very certain, that she stands far above the multitude of novel-writers, the emptiness of whose publications is as extraordinary as their number. The Gipsey Countess is an agreeable tale; and we must do Miss Gunning the justice to add, that we think exercise has exceedingly improved her style and language.
